WORKS! (360s 250gig)

And as to why you would do this... Simple if you have an hd tv (hdmi video) but an old receiver (rca audio), this is the only option. If your nice audio setup is antiquated, it will still put your schmancy TVs audio to shame.

@dsbenson No sir, the OP is NOT kidding. Analog RCA connections, albeit non balanced and not superfacy, are perfectly viable means to pass analog audio between twoconsumer devices.
Like me, the OP doesn't have a DTS decoder with toslink input and the solution he proposes is the only viable one if you want to have the best video quality (hdmi) while using the internal audio DA converters.

Many thanks to the OP.

Sorry about lack of a diagram. Words are just so much easier, but I should do that at some point. I'm not aware of Plex but it looks cool--especially as I've now got a mix of Android, Mac OS and iOS devices working together. [That sounds like another blog post!]

I've had no reason to install OS X Server, as the base OS works fine for sharing media for me. But I believe I've described in this and related posts how to do what you describe--iTunes on the Mac has native support for sharing all over the house. I just Share my library (in the iTunes prefs), and can either push content to all other stereos on my local network (via Airport Express modules), or can pull content to individual devices (via other copies of iTunes or via other software like Plex). Works well--though Push is the easiest.

And you can control your main iTunes (to push content) via any number of ways or devices: Remote app (on iOS), or similar apps on Android, or XBox add-ons, or screen sharing (on pretty much any device--I set this up on my Mac server and can screenshare from other Macs, or Android, or PC).

be interested in a diagram - have just thrown out my windoze gear and gone native apple - am loving it. so much so that I just bought a mac mini server (snow leopard). Have got plex running on this for lots of content going straight through to projector. Now wanting to put itunes library in a single location and thinking I'll use OSX server. How do I serve it up to the other clients - is there a daemon or do I just run iTunes app on the server and home share it?
Thanks, Mark

You're kidding, right? An RCA cable is certainly NOT the best way to connect A/V devices. Even if you use component cables you'd be using something higher quality than an RCA cable--but an all-digital solution is the best visual and audio quality you're going to get (assuming that the device you've got finally decoding the video and the audio is the best device for the job).

Gwen,
We high-school females only ever had the nerve to ask for rides from him in his super-cool Mustang. Thank goodness for the teetotaling, as it made him the ideal person to ask for a ride home after a drama cast party where everyone else thought an empty condominium made the IDEAL ambience for getting wasted. While Marci gained the most, the rest of us did receive some lovely consolation prizes, such as an abiding love for Douglas Adams' oeuvre and vintage copies of the Secret-Man album.

TV won't wake up until you power down the Mini? That's an odd one. Is the issue perhaps that the TV "wakes up" but won't sync to the Mini if the Mini is already on?

Odd thing about what you've said is that if everything is working (mini is on, tv is on), then you turn Off the TV, wait a minute and turn it back on, nothing should have changed in your system, and the TV should be sync'd to the same resolution.

Try this: in your Mini's Preferences, tell the Mini to never put the Display to sleep (screensaver should be fine, just don't let the display sleep). Then if you turn off your TV and the MIni is on, the Mini should continue to put out a video signal.

If that doesn't do the trick, there are utilities out there that can force your Mini to assume a specific screen resolution (width/height) regardless of what display hardware you're hooked to. I used one for a while but found I didn't need it after upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Offtopic: once everything's running, you should still be able to tell your Mini to go to sleep at night when you're not using it, just to save power. I don't have mine shut down (too many things cancel shutdown) but I can have it go to sleep between 1 AM and 7 AM, for instance.
